The air bites into his skin, cold slowly but steadily reaching into his bones as he trudges deeper into the cave. The already dim sunlight hardly reaches past the entrance, the lamp in his hand is not nearly enough to dent the darkness of the deeper parts of the cave, and Azrael can’t help but wonder why he’s doing this to himself. There is no reason whatsoever for him to be venturing into dark crannies in the mountainside this late in the day, especially one he already has explored countless times before. But there’s something about this place in particular. It draws Azrael in, makes him come back again and again looking for something that he can’t even pinpoint. It should be frustrating, but it only makes his curiosity grow more and more every time he comes out of the cave empty-handed and with remnants of freezing cold air clinging to him like cobwebs.Despite the lack of good light, he knows the place well enough to remember for the most part what places to avoid, where to duck and where he needs to climb over rock formations. The lamplight makes the shadows dance around him as he ventures further. It doesn’t take Azrael long to notice the lack of sound; on any other day he’ll hear the chatter of bats and the occasional squeaks of mice as they scatter to get away from the human invading their cave. But today there’s an eerie stillness that weighs heavy on him. He feels obliged to keep his breathing as steady and quiet as possible, as if he’s entering a cathedral and he doesn’t dare disturb the prayers being whispered around him.The watery sunlight has disappeared completely behind Azrael. His fingers are numb around the handle of the oil lamp and he can’t tell if due to the freezing cold or because of how tightly he curls his fingers in an attempt to contain his shivering. He tries to remember if his other visits have been like this; it’s unpleasant and he’s half tempted to just turn around and go back. But he knows his curiosity won’t allow it. And what’s more, he’s already so far inside, he can already tell he’s managed to go further than ever before —he reasons— it would be a waste to undo all the work of getting here. So he wraps his cloak tightly around his body, burrows inside his scarf and holds onto his lamp as he slowly makes his way into the heart of the mountain.
It’s the blinding rage of a lone, betrayed witch that calls to them. They rarely answer the calls of mortals, but there’s something about this one that makes them spare a glance. War-bound, abandoned by those closest to her, dragged by those she thought allies to be jailed like a common criminal. As if she hadn’t just helped them win that war. They can tell she wields an impressive amount of power; nothing to concern them, of course, she’s only a threat to creatures far below them, but… there’s the potential of something more. She could bring down a whole empire if she wanted to, with the right motivation— the right gifts. And she’s so furious, she’s screaming for the skies to hear her. Her captors think she’s asking for absolution in her spitting, foreign language. They don’t know she’s asking whoever might listen to give her enough power to make this whole world fall. And really, who are they to deny a hurting creature? They show themselves to her as soon as the moon is high in the sky. The guards drop unconscious at their will and the witch startles but does not make a sound. The shadows swallow the cell, wrap around her like a shroud, before the night sky pours into it; the stars cluster and shape to make a body for them. The witch stares at them in fascination, love-stuck even, and they can’t help but feel endeared by the way their solid black eyes reflect the stars so beautifully. Like she was meant to be theirs.
